Ilhéus is located in the beginning of road BA-001 and about 32 km from the city of Itabuna. Leaving Salvador on BR-101, the distance to Ilhéus is 460 km.

The national airport of Ilhéus (IOS) has connections with most of Brazil's major cities. There are daily flights to Ilhéus from Salvador, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo. The main companies flying to Ilhéus are TAM, GOL, Azul and Avianca.
The highway BR-101 is the main access for those coming from south of the country. For those who come from the north, Ilhéus is best accessed by highway BA-001.
The buses that make up the route to Ilhéus come from most capital cities in Brazil and the state.
If leaving Salvador the best and quickest option is to take the ferry boat to the island of Itaparica and then continue on by bus to Itacaré. Bus companies like Águia Branca and Cidade Sol operate hourly on this route. The fare costs around R$ 35 and the approximate travel time 4 hours. When one arrive in Itacaré there are buses heading to Ilhéus every hour. The approximate travel time is 2 hours and tickets cost around R$ 14.
Alternatively, there is the option of a direct bus from Salvador's main bus terminal to Ilhéus. The approximate travel time is 9 hours and tickets cost around R$ 95.
Note: In Bom Despacho the buses are available at the same location for the ferry, making travel faster and less tiring.
To get to Ilhéus from Porto Seguro, Trancoso or Arraial D'Ajuda it is better to catch a direct bus at the bus station in Porto Seguro. The approximate travel time is 6 hours and tickets cost around R$ 50.
Driving to Ilhéus from either the north or south, you need to take the BR-101 to Itabuna, and then take the coastal BR-415 and follow it for 40 km until reaching Ilhéus. Coming from Salvador the best option is to catch the ferry to the island of Itaparica's port Bom Despacho and then follow the highway BA-001 until Ilhéus. This way, the distance from Salvador to Ilhéus is reduced to 310 km. If you are arriving from the south like Porto Seguro, Arraial D'Ajuda and Trancoso, it is better to take the BR-367 until Eunápolis and then follow the BR-101 towards Itabuna.
